This is a very budget-friendly fake tail. Once the fake tail is attached/hung, if the horse’s real tail hangs longer past the fake, the real tail may need to be blunt cut to the same level as the fake, so that it matches.
The Knob Top has a larger top than the Natural Loop Top. The Knob Top can be hard to hide if there’s not a lot of the horse’s real hair to cover it. In this case, a Natural Loop Top is preferred, as it has a sleeker top (easier to hide).
If the colour is not a perfect match, might be able to make it work if it’s ‘blended’ in. I find with the sorrel colours, that if it matches one of the colours in the real tail, it can usually work (see photo). Hang/attach the tail to truly see if it will work (don’t just hold the tail beside the real tail).
*A fake tail, and the tail braid, should be taken out after showing, as soon as possible. Docks are very sensitive. Fakes hung for a long time, can cause damage.
NEVER leave a fake/tail braid in for more than 1 day. The dock needs a break. It can be re-done that night/next morning.
Tails should be ‘pulled up’ (see photo), anytime when the horse isn’t being ridden- in the trailer, in the stall, including in the stall between classes. The shavings create a ‘higher’ floor, so it’s quite easy for the horse to step on their fake, and rip it out, or the tail could fall apart from being stepped on.
*LENGTH: To determine the minimum length needed, measure in inches, from bottom of dock, to bottom of fetlocks. Then add on 1-2” to your measurement. See photo. The fake should run alongside the dock/tail bone for 1-2”, so it swings with their tail. If not getting the tail braided, it can run for more than 2” alongside the dock.
IF THE TAIL IS GETTING BRAIDED: Fakes that are too long/hung higher up, can cause bulk/a bulge under the braid- See photo. In this case, it should be cut a bit, to run only 2” along the side the dock (so it sits lower).
❌Fake tails are NOT meant for daily use. They are not meant for horses that have short tails, and need a longer tail to swat at flies ❌
-HAIR FALL: to prevent, reduce, or fix hairs from falling out, can add Contact Cement to the base of the hairs near the knob (see photo). Visible glue can be removed with nail polish remover. Most of these fakes, already have been glued.

Care Instructions (Please See Photos For More Information): wash with same shampoo, and conditioner you use to wash your horse’s real tail. Hang to dry. Once dry, spray with Show Sheen. Brush EXTREMELY gently. Most of these fakes, already come washed. Having a few hairs come out is normal. When not in use, hang freely (not in cover bag). The cover bag should just be used for bringing the tail from one place to another. Don’t store it in a tack trunk laying down. If the tail is not kept straight, it may create a curl.
TO REMOVE CURL: put water/Show Sheen on the curl, and gently brush.
COLOURS:
Jet black- every hair is solid black/dark black.
Natural black- lighter than jet black. Contains red, and white hairs throughout. The bottom of the tail is frequently reddish in colour.
Light sorrel- very light in colour. I don’t carry this colour. Photo is just to show the difference in sorrel colours.
Medium sorrel- mostly red, with some white, and black hairs, naturally mixed in.
Dark sorrel- very deep red. Appears dark brown, but turns a real dark red in the sunlight.
